The OTA window is the first real evaluation lab of the NFL year, and for contract-year and contract-watch players it is also a live audition tape for next March. Across all eight divisions, a handful of players entering 2026 voluntary workouts have a 2027 market hanging on whether they win — or hold — a starting role this summer. Numbered in descending order of surprise, here are the watchlists.

9. AFC East — The Archetype: A Bills Edge Holding Off Younger Draft Capital

Buffalo Bills quarterback, Josh Allen has the ball knocked loose on the last drive of the game by Bryce Huff of the Jets to cap off a NY Jets 20-17 win over the Buffalo Bills as the two teams met in an AFC East game played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on November 6 2022. Every AFC East contender has a familiar archetype to watch: a contract-year edge defender working into a rotation that wants to give snaps to younger draft capital. The role this kind of player must hold is base-down DE1 with a piece of the third-down passing-down package; lose those reps and the 2027 market evaporates. Cap context for the archetype: a final-year rookie deal with franchise-tag eligibility but a tag number that bites a contender’s cap. OTA watch: Bills voluntary OTAs run across Phases 2–3 from late May into mid-June — track first-team nickel reps versus rotational reps with younger players.

8. NFC East — Donovan Ezeiruaku’s Workload Tells the Story in Dallas

East Rutherford, New Jersey — 06 / 11 / 2009 — Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants — NFC Divisional Playoff Game — Giants Domenik Hixon runs onto the field for warmups before the game.

Cowboys edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku logged 569 defensive snaps as a rookie, the most of any returning edge player on Dallas’s roster, with pass-rush and run-stop metrics that earned him every-down trust. The role he must hold is a starter’s snap share opposite Dallas’s top edge in a revamped front. Cap context: Ezeiruaku is early in his rookie deal, so the 2027 ripple actually sits with veteran teammates whose snap share collapses if he climbs further. OTA watch: Cowboys OTAs span late May through mid-June — watch first-team defensive line combinations on early-down team periods.

7. AFC North — Mason McCormick’s Quiet Climb in Pittsburgh

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase (1) runs for extra yardage after a catch in the fourth quarter during a Week 17 NFL game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 34-31. With the win the, the Cincinnati Bengals won the AFC North division and advance to the NFL playoffs. Steelers guard Mason McCormick posted a 57.7 PFF overall grade as a rookie in 2024 (87th of 136 guards) before starting all 17 games in 2025 and finishing with a 71.1 overall grade and a 71.6 pass-block grade, 16th among qualified guards. The role to hold is an interior O-line starter spot as Pittsburgh’s offense reshapes around new pieces. Cap context: McCormick is still on his rookie deal, but his climb pressures the 2027 markets of every veteran guard around him in the AFC North. Sports Illustrated described Baltimore’s offensive overhaul as an “Extreme Makeover,” with rookie guard Olaivavega Ioane and free-agent signee John Simpson openly competing for starting spots on a roster that lost multiple veteran starters. OTA watch: AFC North OTAs run late May through mid-June — track first-team interior O-line combinations in Phase 3.

6. NFC North — A Packers Receiver in Matthew Golden’s Shadow

Green Bay waited 23 years before drafting a wide receiver in the first round again, finally taking Matthew Golden 23rd overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Packers.com reported that former receivers Randall Cobb and James Jones are “buying into” Golden’s potential after watching him work. The archetype to watch: a Packers veteran wideout whose snap share collapses if Golden takes WR1 reps in OTAs and whose 2027 market depends on holding a meaningful target share. Cap context for the archetype: an expiring veteran contract with little guaranteed money beyond 2026. OTA watch: Packers OTAs run late May into mid-June — watch which receiver lines up split-wide opposite Golden in 11 personnel.

5. AFC South — A Punter Battle With Real Money on the Line

Tennessee Titans defensive linemen Jevon Kearse, left, and Albert Haynesworth celebrate their 28-10 victory over their AFC South foe Jacksonville Jaguars on the sideline late in the fourth quarter at Alltell Stadium in Jacksonville on Dec. 22, 2002.

Houston Press summed up the Texans’ offseason perfectly: “We finally have a good, old fashioned punter battle!” Trade acquisition Kai Kroeger arrived from New Orleans to challenge undrafted free agent Jake Stonehouse out of Syracuse, who entered the offseason as an early favorite. The role to hold is the only punter job on the roster — losers at this position get cut, not demoted. Cap context: punters changing teams typically work on minimum or near-minimum deals, and a strong showing can turn a winner into a multi-year specialist contract elsewhere. OTA watch: Texans OTAs run late May to mid-June — special-teams periods are short but every hangtime gets logged.

4. NFC South — Kelvin Banks Jr. Anchors the Saints’ New Front

Saints rookie tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. posted a 73.3 PFF overall grade — the highest among qualified rookie tackles — and a 76.2 run-blocking grade that ranked second among all rookie offensive linemen. The role he must hold is LT1, which he already owns. The contract-watch ripple sits with veteran Saints linemen whose 2027 markets depend on whether they can lock down the spots beside him. Cap context: any veteran swing tackle on a one-year deal in this room is auditioning every rep. OTA watch: Saints OTAs run late May to mid-June — track which tackle takes first-team RT reps in team periods.

3. AFC West — The Archetype: A Chargers Defender on the Tag Bubble

The AFC West’s biggest 2027 number archetype is a Chargers defender entering the final year of his rookie deal in a defense that prizes positional versatility. The role to hold is an every-down job in base and sub packages; lose two-high or nickel reps and the next contract drops a tier. Cap context for this archetype: franchise-tag eligible at a number Los Angeles can absorb only if OTA tape supports every-down value. OTA watch: Chargers OTAs run late May into mid-June — track communication and rotation calls in 7-on-7 split-safety periods.

2. NFC West — The Archetype: A Seahawks Off-Ball LB on a Prove-It Deal

Dec 28, 2014; Seattle, WA, USA; St. Louis Rams running back Benny Cunningham (36) fumbles into the end zone while defended by Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas (29) and cornerback Byron Maxwell (41) in the fourth quarter at CenturyLink Field. he Seahawks defeated the Rams 20-6 to clinch the NFC West division title. The NFC West’s contract-year archetype is a Seahawks off-ball linebacker on a one-year prove-it deal who must hold an every-down role to reset his market. The role to win is the LB next to a returning starter; lose nickel snaps and he becomes a two-down rotational body, killing his 2027 leverage. Cap context for the archetype: void-year structure, no franchise-tag realism, pure open-market audition. OTA watch: Seahawks OTAs run late May through mid-June — watch sub-package reps and whether he comes off the field on third down.

1. AFC North Twist — Cleveland’s Quarterback Room Resets the Whole Market

Jaguars fans in the north end zone turn up the volume as Tennessee Titans quarterback Joshua Dobbs (11) lines up behind center during early fourth quarter action. The most surprising 2027-market mover sits in Cleveland, where FantasyLife projected Shedeur Sanders to start 10 games versus Deshaun Watson’s 7, a roughly 59/41 split. Watson has carried one of the worst EPA-per-dropback marks among starting quarterbacks over the previous two seasons, and Sanders’ OTA reps will help determine whether the Browns ride out Watson’s contract or move on. The role to win is QB1 outright, which would force every quarterback-needy team to recalibrate 2027 free agency around Cleveland’s depth chart. Cap context: Watson’s contract is the league’s most-watched dead-money problem; Sanders is on a rookie deal with major fifth-year option implications down the line. OTA watch: Browns OTAs run late May into mid-June — first-team reps in 11-on-11 are the only stat that matters.

Why OTAs Matter More Than Camp for These Eight

An official NFL ball used during the Saints v. Vikings NFC championship game given to Bruno’s Pizza sits on a table as people remove Purdue University and other sports memorabilia off the walls of Bruno’s Pizza after officially closing its doors, on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2024, in West Lafayette Ind.

OTA reps look casual on the surface — no pads, no live tackling, voluntary attendance — but they set the depth-chart hierarchy that camp simply confirms. For contract-year players, every Phase 3 team period is a snap their agent will cite next March. The fights multiply, and so do the consequences.Which contract-year battle in your team’s division do you think will reset the 2027 market — and which player nobody’s naming yet deserves a spot on this list?
