Four days before Super Bowl Sunday, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ dynasty duo, were on completely different paths for the first time in years. Mahomes was at home, his knee wrapped in ice, while Kelce was hitting golf shots at TPC Scottsdale as thousands of fans roared. This separation felt unnatural — and unmistakable.
How Did We Even Get Here?

Super Bowl 57: Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes passes the the Lombardi Trophy to Travis Kelce after winning the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium on Feb 12, 2023.
But how did the two get here? Well, the Chiefs found themselves in a place that no one could have predicted. The team finished 6-11, losing its first season since 2012. The loss also marked the end of a 10-year playoff streak that included five Super Bowl trips, three rings, and seven AFC Championship appearances. While Kelce now faces a career crossroads thanks to no contracts, Mahomes nurses a torn (anterior cruciate ligament) ACL in his left knee, which has effectively sidelined him through the offseason.
From Speculation To Actual Possibility

It’s important to note, though, that the divergence between the celebrated players didn’t simply occur overnight. For weeks, enthusiasts have been wondering what happens when Mahomes can’t carry the franchise physically, and when Kelce’s life off the Chiefs’ field becomes bigger than the one that exists on the field now. Well, the 6-11 result, coupled with Kelce’s pro-am appearance and looming wedding to Taylor Swift, just morphed that question from mere speculation to an actual possibility.
The X Post

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce plays his tee shot on the 16th hole during the Annexus Pro-Am at the WM Phoenix Open on Feb. 4, 2026, at TPC Scottsdale.
Fans thought Mahomes’ “Let’s go!!!!! @tkelce 🎯🎯🎯” post on X on February 4 implied a return from retirement or perhaps something to do with Kelce’s upcoming wedding. However, the post was about Kelce’s near-ace at the WM Phoenix Open Pro-Am. Kelce was able to strike a tee shot on the famous par-3 16th hole to within a few feet and won the gold WM chain.
Two Sides Of The Spectrum

On one end of the spectrum, you have Mahomes, who can’t train, let alone lead on-field workouts during the most critical rebuild year of his career. On the other end is Kelce, who is clearly thriving in celebrity circles alongside his fiancée. There’s no denying that their offseason rhythms are off if not disconnected, a first since they became teammates back in the day. It’s even more interesting that the new league year begins on March 11, yet Kelce’s future with the Chiefs remains uncertain.
Keeping Kelce Might Not Be As Easy

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (87) greets Joey Borgonzi, 10, after their game at Nissan Stadium Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025. The Titans beat the Chiefs 26-9.
Heading into the 2026 league, the Chiefs rank last on the salary cap among all 32 teams. The number is currently more than $50 million over the projected cap ceiling. Massive restructuring and roster cuts may be in order for the Chiefs before March 11. Among the fixes that may help the team reduce that number are a Chris Jones extension, which could save approximately $27 million, and cutting Jawaan Taylor, which would free up around $20 million. However, even those moves barely get Kansas City back to zero. As such, keeping Kelce might not be as simple as some may think.
Who Else This Affects

As you would expect, the whole situation affects more than just Kelce. In fact, it stretches across the entire roster. As of this writing, the Chiefs own the picks in the upcoming draft, each a premium selection that the team hasn’t had in years. However, it needs young, cheap talent to take on the gaps left by cap casualties. Andy Reid can’t finalize a 2026 roster strategy until Kelce’s decision is made. Everything, from draft board priorities and veteran restructures to free agent targets, depends on whether the tight end comes back or walks away.
More Cash Off-Field?

Kelce’s off-field earnings are another pillar worth considering here. His “New Heights” podcast, alongside his brother Jason, landed a $100 million-plus deal with Amazon’s Wondery. Kelce’s share of the earnings alone is enough to rival what he’s getting in the NFL. Couple his fame and achievements with Swift’s marriage spotlight, and media opportunities and endorsement deals start lining up. With all this, Kelce’s earning potential could far surpass what he’s been making in his 13-year career on the field.
What Happens Next?

There is much uncertainty ahead when you consider questions such as can the Chiefs rebuild with Mahomes’ health status, Kelce’s overall situation and whether the team can afford him. With the league’s worst cap situation, is the Super Bowl run even plausible? At the moment, no one in the organization has given any answers. Kelce has given no timeline on his retirement decision either, which might muddy things as the franchise is running out of calendar days to plan around the silence.
The Question Everyone’s Avoiding

Mahomes’ post was simply him cheering on his teammate’s golf shot, which is good sportsmanship and friendship. The words, “Let’s go!!!!!” set the internet ablaze. However, meaning aside, the question still lingers. Will the two still be teammates when training camp opens? March is quickly approaching, and the Chiefs need an answer by the middle of that month.
