Just days earlier, Atlanta Falcons first-round pick James Pearce Jr. was among the NFL’s brightest young defenders. His stats included 10.5 sacks in his debut season, the most for a rookie since Micah Parsons recorded 13 sacks as a rookie in 2021. He set a franchise rookie record, helping drive a major improvement in Atlanta’s pass rush. The pass rusher, a 22-year-old, drafted 26th overall, finished third in AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting at NFL Honors on Thursday, February 5. But all of that was before everything changed.
Saturday Shattered

A routine Saturday morning drive in Doral, Florida, turned into a nightmare for WNBA forward Rickea Jackson. As per the criminal complaint obtained by ESPN, Jackson, a starter for the Los Angeles Sparks, noticed a white Lamborghini SUV tailing her vehicle. The driver? Her ex-boyfriend, Falcons rookie James Pearce Jr. The moment Jackson stopped at a red light, Pearce allegedly exited the SUV and tried to open her car door. She drove toward the nearest police station to seek safety. But this was only the beginning.
Violent Pursuit

Pearce allegedly jumped back into his SUV and chased her. The criminal affidavit states that he “intentionally collided into the rear of her vehicle” as Jackson fled toward the station. After the initial rear-ending, Pearce allegedly drove into the front of Jackson’s car near the station’s entrance. Jackson had blocked his number after they broke up, but he used an alternative number to contact her repeatedly from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. Prosecutors cited that pattern of contact in the aggravated stalking charge. But the digital harassment quickly escalated into alleged vehicular assault in less than 24 hours.
Confrontation Escalates

Doral police found Pearce standing beside the Lamborghini SUV with its door open. An officer drew his weapon and ordered Pearce to lie on the ground. Instead, he allegedly climbed back into the vehicle, pulled the door shut, and locked it. When the officer opened the door, he reportedly pulled it closed again and drove away. As the SUV lurched forward, it struck the officer in his left knee. The vehicle wouldn’t go far; Pearce crashed at a nearby intersection. But he didn’t stop there.
Five Felonies Filed

Pearce abandoned the vehicle, fleeing on foot before officers tackled and detained him. They allege that he resisted by tensing his arms. The Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office charged Pearce with five felonies: one count of aggravated stalking, two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, and fleeing and eluding police. There’s also a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer without violence.
Two Worlds Collide

Booked at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Saturday evening, Pearce was released later Sunday after posting a $20,500 bond. On the other end of the case is Rickea Jackson, 24, who, like Pearce, was carving a name for herself in the sports world. She was the fourth overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and earned All-Rookie honors after a strong debut season for the Los Angeles Sparks. In 2025, she was a starter and one of the Sparks’ primary scoring options. Both she and Pearce attended the University of Tennessee, where their relationship began. She appeared with him at the NFL Draft when he was selected by Atlanta.

The NFL has confirmed that the matter will be reviewed under its Personal Conduct Policy. After high-profile domestic violence cases, the NFL strengthened this policy. It sets a baseline six-game suspension without pay for violations involving assault, battery, or domestic violence. It also includes longer bans when aggravating factors, such as the use of a weapon, are present. A second offense can lead to banishment.
Career at Stake

The Falcons invested in Pearce, trading up to secure him with the 26th overall pick. That investment appeared to pay off immediately, as his 10.5 sacks led the team and set a franchise rookie record. The team’s statement read: “We are aware of an incident involving James Pearce Jr. in Miami. We are in the process of gathering more information and will not have any further comment on an open legal matter at this time.”
Pattern of Escalation

Experts who study domestic violence highlighted behaviors in the case that are signs of escalating risk: repeated unwanted contact, following a victim, and using a vehicle to intimidate. Jackson told police she’d ended a roughly three-year relationship with Pearce and blocked his number. Yet he allegedly contacted her using another number and then followed her in person. A stay-away order is now in place, but how the criminal courts and the NFL respond to the broader pattern remains an open question.

Just days separated a high-profile appearance at NFL Honors from a night in a Miami-Dade jail. While Pearce is free on bond, his legal battle is just beginning. As the case moves forward in Florida, the NFL will conduct its own review under the Personal Conduct Policy.
