Then Arizona’s new head coach, Mike LaFleur, who spent three years as LA’s offensive coordinator, started to swoop in. If Garoppolo walks, the Rams’ QB depth chart is basically a dare. Stetson Bennett IV, a 2023 fourth-round pick making $1.145 million, is the only arm behind Stafford. He’s thrown zero regular-season passes. Not a few. Zero. Behind a 38-year-old MVP with no extension locked in. That’s not a backup plan. That’s a coin flip wearing a helmet, and the Rams built it by dodging the succession question for three straight years.

Arizona nuked the NFC West QB market by cutting Kyler Murray loose, eating $36.8 million in dead cap for 2026 to avoid paying another $19.5 million in 2027. Murray was the first overall pick in 2019. Seven seasons. Zero playoff wins. An 0-1 postseason record for his entire career. The Cardinals basically paid $36.8 million to admit they got it wrong. That fallout didn’t stay in the desert. It crashed straight into the Rams’ backup plans.

The 2026 backup QB market is an absolute circus. Three legit starters hit free agency at once: Aaron Rodgers, Murray, and Tua Tagovailoa. The next tier includes Willis, Flacco, Russell Wilson, and Garoppolo. Willis alone could command $20 to $33 million a year. The salary cap jumped to $301.2 million, up $22 million from last year, but that extra cash disappears fast when half the league is chasing the same handful of QBs.

Arizona’s implosion didn’t just wreck the Cardinals. It shifted the entire NFC West power balance toward whoever fixes their QB depth first. The Rams’ free agency window opens March 11 at 4 p.m. ET, giving them roughly 72 hours to find a Garoppolo replacement or accept Bennett as the plan. Used to be simple. Win MVP, get the bag, build around the guy. Stafford’s situation rewrites that entire playbook. Three straight offseasons of renegotiations despite elite production say something bigger is happening. GM Les Snead confirmed a “year-to-year approach” while leaving extension talk open. So even the league’s best quarterback gets treated like a rental. Every future MVP negotiation will point back to this mess.

Stafford turns 39 in 2027. If contract limbo drags past this season, the Rams face a double nightmare: Stafford’s retirement timeline and Garoppolo’s permanent exit colliding at once. The 2026 draft has exactly one consensus first-round QB prospect. The fallback plan is mid-season waiver pickups or overpaying for a reclamation project. Bennett would walk into a Week 5 game having never taken a meaningful snap. The clock doesn’t care about “great dialogue.”

The Rams have options. Frontload a Stafford extension to free cap room. Chase a Garoppolo re-signing or a Willis deal. Draft a QB in rounds two or three. Trade for a veteran backup.
