The Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions entered Week 12 as heavy favorites but barely avoided home upsets. The Chiefs looked to avoid a sixth loss and improve to 6-5 against the Colts, while the Lions faced a 2-9 Giants team to stay near the top of the NFC North alongside the Bears.

Kansas City had a slow start on offense against the Colts and trailed 20-9 by the end of the 3rd quarter. In the 4th, multiple 3-and-Outs forced by the Chiefs’ defense shifted momentum. These stops led to a field goal, followed by a Patrick Mahomes touchdown and a two-point conversion, tying the game and forcing overtime. In extra time, another defensive stand set up a game-winning field goal for Kansas City.

Detroit found itself in a similar situation against the New York Giants, who, led by Jameis Winston, arrived at Ford Field prepared with a variety of trick plays. Among these was a quarterback throwback to Winston for a touchdown. Late in the game, the Lions trailed 24-27, but managed to force overtime thanks to a dramatic 59-yard field goal by kicker Jake Bates. In overtime, running back Jahmyr Gibbs unleashed a 69-yard touchdown run. Aiden Hutchinson then sealed the game, sacking Winston to secure the victory.

Both the Chiefs and Lions forced overtime to avoid losing to heavily favored opponents, but demonstrated resilience by securing the win. The Chiefs’ victory over the Colts keeps them in contention for an AFC wild-card spot, as their 6-5 record keeps them within reach of the playoffs. Meanwhile, Detroit’s win preserves their standing just one game behind the NFC North-leading Chicago Bears and helps maintain momentum against division rivals, while sparing them the setback of a loss to the struggling Giants.
