Less than three years after the Indianapolis Colts spent the fourth overall pick on Anthony Richardson, both sides have agreed to part ways. NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe broke the news on February 26, reporting the Colts met with Richardson’s agent at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and reached a mutual decision. “Colts and Anthony Richardson have mutually agreed to seek a trade,” Wolfe wrote. “Fresh start coming for 2023 No. 4 pick, Richardson.”

From Franchise Hope to Trade Commodity

Richardson arrived in Indianapolis in 2023 as the Colts’ most electrifying quarterback prospect in years, a rare blend of arm talent and elite athleticism. The organization invested a top-five pick and significant resources into building around him. Yet three seasons later, Richardson departs without ever fully establishing himself as the team’s starter, his tenure defined more by missed time than memorable moments on the field.

A Career Derailed by Injuries

In three NFL seasons, Richardson appeared in just 17 games and made 15 starts. He finished with a 50.6% career completion rate, 2,400 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions, numbers that reflect chronic inconsistency rather than the development the Colts had hoped for. His 2025 season lasted only two games before a fractured orbital bone suffered during pregame warmups in Week 6 ended his year.

The 2024 Benching That Changed Everything

The decisive blow to Richardson’s standing in Indianapolis came midway through 2024. Richardson posted a league-worst 47.7% completion rate and threw 12 interceptions before the Colts benched him in favor of veteran Joe Flacco. The benching signaled that the organization had lost confidence in Richardson’s ability to manage an NFL offense at that stage of his development.

Ballard’s Public Support

Despite the friction, Ballard remained outwardly supportive of Richardson in the weeks leading up to the trade decision. At the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, Ballard said: “I’m not gonna say he needs a complete fresh start. Anthony’s still young. He’s still developing. So, we’ll see what the future holds. I still believe in Anthony.” That statement came just days before both parties agreed to move on.

Daniel Jones Locks Up the Job

The arrival of Daniel Jones reshaped the Colts’ quarterback room entirely. Jones took over as the starter in 2025 and performed well enough that Indianapolis is expected to use the transition tag on Jones heading into free agency, signaling their intent to retain him as QB1 while negotiations on a long-term deal continue. With Jones entrenched as QB1 and rookie Riley Leonard emerging as a capable backup after a strong Week 18 showing, the Colts had no viable role left for Richardson on the depth chart.

Ballard’s Respect Remained Genuine

Even as the trade decision was finalized, Ballard made clear his respect for Richardson as a person. At the Combine, he spoke emotionally about Richardson’s injury challenges, his character as a teammate, and his positive attitude throughout a difficult tenure in Indianapolis. At just 23 years old, Richardson still has time to rebuild his career with a new franchise.

What Indianapolis Could Receive in Return

The Colts hold limited leverage in trade negotiations. Richardson carries a $10.82 million cap hit in 2026 with a $4.24 million roster bonus due in August, and rival teams are fully aware he would have been the team’s QB3 behind Jones and Leonard. If dealt before June 1, Indianapolis would save approximately $5.385 million in cap space. Analysts expect the return to land somewhere in the mid-round range rather than premium draft capital.

Teams Already Circling Richardson

Several franchises have been linked to Richardson as potential trade destinations. The Minnesota Vikings, whose head coach Kevin O’Connell reportedly coveted Richardson during the 2023 draft process, are viewed as a strong developmental fit. The Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers have also surfaced as realistic suitors for the 23-year-old quarterback seeking a clean slate.

A Cautionary Tale of Rushed Development

The Richardson saga serves as a cautionary tale for NFL teams chasing upside over readiness. The Colts invested heavily in a young quarterback before he had fully developed the technical and mental tools required for an NFL starting role and paid the price in lost seasons and wasted resources. Richardson’s physical tools remain undeniable, and a change of scenery under the right coaching staff could still unlock the franchise-caliber potential that made him a top-five pick just three years ago.
