Breece Hall was watching Super Bowl LX when something broke loose inside him. While two teams fought for a championship he’d never tasted, the 24-year-old Jets running back opened his phone and typed what sounded like a prayer: “Hope I get to experience football on this stage. Everything on the line. I’ll get there one day. I know it…” Just over a week later, the NFL’s franchise tag window opened.

A Career Year With No Reward

Hall entered this offseason on the final year of his rookie contract, coming off a career-high 1,065 rushing yards and strong efficiency numbers. His peers at the position are starting to cash in. Kyren Williams signed a three-year extension worth $33 million, an average of $11 million annually. James Cook agreed to a four-year, $48 million extension, worth $12 million per year in new money. Hall’s market value is often discussed in a similar range. The Jets went 3-14 in 2025. They have a new general manager and a relatively new head coach, along with significant projected cap space. None of it has yet translated into a long-term commitment for Hall.

The Pattern Nobody Can Ignore

This didn’t come out of nowhere. At the November trade deadline, the Chiefs offered a 2026 fourth-round pick for Hall. The Jets wanted a higher pick and were seeking a third-round selection. The deal fell through before the deadline. Reporting indicated Hall was open to a move after other stars were traded, and that he was interested in joining another team, according to ESPN. The Jets did not trade him and have not announced an extension, leaving both sides in limbo.

The Tag Is Not a Compliment

The franchise tag is a powerful team tool, but it often functions as a short-term holding move rather than a long-term vote of confidence. The Jets are widely expected to place the running back franchise tag—projected at roughly $14–14.5 million—on Hall before the March 3 deadline, paying him more on a one-year tag than many top backs receive annually on multi-year deals, but without long-term security. With substantial cap space available, this appears to be more about organizational strategy and timing than raw affordability.

The Numbers That Earned Him More

Hall’s 2025 season placed him among the league’s more productive backs. He set a new career high with 1,065 rushing yards and contributed significantly as a receiver, while reducing his fumbles to two on the year. Incoming offensive coordinator Frank Reich has a track record of incorporating zone runs and pass-catching backs into his offenses, a profile that fits Hall’s skill set. From a production standpoint, Hall answered key questions about workload and consistency.

One Pick Away From Kansas City

Kansas City came close to addressing its running back spot by targeting Hall. The Chiefs were willing to offer a 2026 fourth-round pick, while the Jets held out for a third-rounder. That one-round gap—a meaningful difference in draft capital value—kept Hall in New York. The Chiefs ultimately concluded that giving up a 2026 third-round pick for a partial season and postseason run with Hall was too steep. Hall stayed, the Jets’ season bottomed out at 3-14, and now the two sides are approaching a franchise-tag decision without a long-term resolution in place.

A Signal That Echoes Through the Building

Using the tag on a 24-year-old back coming off his best season sends a message to the rest of the roster about how the team is handling prime-age talent. Other contenders, including Kansas City, have already been linked to Hall in trade reporting or speculative future interest. If he plays out the tag and then reaches free agency down the line, teams with clearer Super Bowl windows are likely to take a close look.

Saquon Barkley Already Wrote This Story

Saquon Barkley has already lived a version of this script. The Giants placed the franchise tag on him in 2023, then chose not to use it again, and never agreed to a long-term deal in New York. Barkley later said he would have signed for $10–11 million per year “if they would’ve just operated a whole different way.” Instead, he left in free agency for the Philadelphia Eagles, a longstanding Giants rival, and went on to win a Super Bowl with them. The Jets, meanwhile, carry a 15-year playoff drought—the longest active postseason drought in major North American pro sports.

The Clock That Haunts Both Sides

Hall and the Jets have until July 15 to negotiate a multi-year extension if the tag is applied. After that date, he would have to play the 2026 season on the one-year tender if he signs it. Tagged players frequently express frustration with the lack of long-term security, and some opt out of voluntary offseason workouts in response. Hall has already made it clear he’s thinking about playing on a Super Bowl stage someday, even if the team and uniform remain to be determined.

Two Weeks to Rewrite the Ending

The franchise tag window closes March 3. The Jets can make their move at any point until then, but multiple reports suggest they are strongly considering the tag for Hall. Over these two weeks, the team can either reach a long-term agreement, apply the tag as a bridge, or pivot to a trade scenario. The Barkley saga offers one example of how a tag-first approach can end with a star leaving and succeeding elsewhere. The question now is whether the Jets will secure Hall for the long term, use the tag as a short-term fix, or eventually watch another team give him the stage he’s been imagining.
