The 2026 NFL Draft is shaping up to be a dream for teams in need of pass rushers. This year’s class is the deepest since 2023, and as many as seven edge prospects could go in the first round. But beneath the surface, a quiet battle is brewing over how teams should evaluate these players. Old-school scouts still put their faith in college sack numbers, while analytics departments lean on advanced projections that try to predict five years into the future. These two perspectives can create completely different rankings, and as April 23 draws closer, teams are under pressure to decide which approach to believe.
David Bailey Led the Entire FBS in Sacks

David Bailey was unstoppable in 2025, racking up 14.5 sacks (more than any other pass rusher in the FBS). ESPN’s SackSEER projection system is just as high on him, forecasting 26.6 sacks over his first five NFL seasons, the best projection of any edge prospect this year. Analysts have even drawn comparisons to franchise legends like Khalil Mack and DeMarcus Ware. Still, the debate rages on: Is Bailey really the top edge rusher in this loaded class? Not everyone is convinced, even with his impressive stats.
The Jets Cancelled Bailey’s Top-30 Visit

Despite being widely seen as a top-two prospect, Bailey saw his scheduled top-30 visit with the New York Jets abruptly cancelled. It’s a move that has sent a wave of uncertainty through the top of the draft, with the potential to shake up the entire first round. According to SI.com, the Jets are still weighing Bailey against Arvell Reese for the title of best pass rusher in this class. With the No. 2 pick up for grabs, the ripple effects of that cancelled visit could be felt all the way down the board.
Malachi Lawrence’s 7 Sacks Hide a Projection Secret

Malachi Lawrence’s numbers on paper don’t jump off the page. He finished his senior year with just seven sacks, the kind of stat line that usually means a player won’t hear his name called until Day 3. But ESPN’s SackSEER tells a different story, projecting Lawrence for 18.5 sacks over his first five years in the NFL. That’s enough to put him squarely in the first-round conversation. The huge gap (164%) between his college stats and his pro projection says a lot about how analytics can uncover hidden potential that traditional stats might miss. Some see shades of Joseph Ossai and Jamie Collins Sr. in Lawrence’s game.
SackSEER Contradicts College Statistics Across the Board

This split between college stats and projections isn’t unique to Lawrence. Bailey, for example, had more than double the sacks Lawrence did in college (a 107% difference). But when you look at SackSEER’s projections, that gap shrinks to just 44%. In other words, analytics suggest their NFL futures might not be as far apart as their college numbers. The system was specifically built to spot players “whose explosive characteristics make them worth taking a chance on despite mediocre collegiate sack production.” Now, teams are left facing a tough decision about which philosophy to trust.
Rueben Bain Jr. Defies the Prototype

Rueben Bain Jr. doesn’t have the classic build scouts look for in an edge rusher, but don’t tell that to the folks at CBS Sports. They say he “plays like a potential No. 1 pick.” Over two-plus seasons, Bain piled up 24 tackles for loss and 14 sacks while also leading his team as captain. While undersized edge rushers have often been overlooked in the past, several analysts now believe Bain could go in the top five. His story might just change how the NFL thinks about size versus production.
Akheem Mesidor’s Pass Rush Grade Ranks Seventh in All of FBS

Miami’s Akheem Mesidor had a monster 2025, notching 12.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss, and earning an eye-popping 92.5 pass rush grade (seventh best in the entire FBS). On Daniel Jeremiah’s official NFL.com board, only three edge rushers are ranked higher: Bailey, Reese, and Bain Jr. Mesidor stands out as one of the rare prospects who ticks every box, with impressive stats and glowing analytical reviews alike.
Cashius Howell Brings SEC Defensive Player of the Year Credentials

Cashius Howell is hard to miss. He’s 6-4, 248 pounds, and coming into the draft as the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year. As a redshirt senior, Howell pairs proven dominance in the country’s toughest conference with the kind of size every scout loves. Greg Cosell of NFL Films made sure to include Howell in his analysis of this year’s top edge prospects. In a class packed with talent, Howell’s track record in the SEC gives him a rock-solid floor.
Zion Young’s Rising Stock Defies His Own Projection

Missouri’s Zion Young is another fascinating case. He created 57 quarterback pressures in 2025 and boasts an NFL-ready frame at 6-5, 262 pounds. Even though SackSEER labeled him “most likely to disappoint,” Young’s draft stock has soared after his eye-catching combine showing. His rise is proof that one big pre-draft moment can change everything. Sometimes, the numbers just can’t keep up. With 17 edge rushers in the rankings but only seven first-round spots, Young’s late surge could bump some big names down to Day 2.
Ten Ranked Prospects Won’t Go in Round One

With 17 edge rushers on the board, about 10 are likely to fall to Day 2 or later. That’s nearly 60% facing a longer wait than they hoped. This crunch forces teams into some tough decisions: Do they trust college production, or roll the dice on raw traits and projections? The stakes are huge. The wrong pick could set a franchise back years and cost millions. When the draft kicks off on April 23, we’ll finally get to see which side wins the NFL’s evaluation war.
