Stafford Locks In 18th Season With 7 Words After Vote Seals Closest MVP Race In 23 Years

Matthew Stafford and his four daughters stood on the NFL Honors stage. Stafford grabbed the mic and declared his next move, “I’ll see you guys next year.” To punctuate his words, the Associated Press MVP tally confirmed a hair’s breadth-thin finish, with Stafford edging Drake Maye 366-361 points. The race between the two players was the closest since 2003. However, that vote would only be the start of the story.

A Gutting Loss

After a gutting 31-27 NFC Championship loss to Seattle, many eyes were on Stafford, who’d been approached by reporters in the locker room regarding his retirement. Stafford’s response was resolute: “I can’t generalize six months of my life 10 minutes after a loss”. His highlights in the game had included three touchdowns, zero interceptions, a 127.6 passer rating, and 374 passing yards. A visibly irritated Coach McVay responded when asked whether Stafford would return by saying he could “if he still wanted to play.” But even he couldn’t give a definite answer.

Taking A Toll

But all this isn’t new. The Rams quarterback had “seriously contemplated retirement during each of the past two offseasons”. Some of the reasons include a number of health issues that threatened to pull him out of the field permanently, including a spinal cord contusion in 2022 and complications arising from an aggravated disk in his back in 2025. The question grew louder and louder every offseason, with the Rams even quietly exploring emergency quarterback contingencies. That is why this time, everyone assumed the answer from Stafford might finally be a no.

Choosing The Right Stage

What’s interesting about Stafford’s confirmation that he’d be playing was that he chose the stage to relay the news. He could have shared it with McVay in private or even released a statement. He could have let his agent share it or even post it on social media. Instead, after eleven days of utter silence over the matter, Stafford chose the single biggest individual spotlight in football to drop seven words. With the news, he also addressed his daughters on stage, stating that he “can’t wait for you to cheer me on next year when we’re out there kicking a**.”

Seven Words

“I’ll see you guys next year,” came the seven words that cemented everything he’d just said. The announcement didn’t just shed light on his retirement question; it reset the Rams’ entire off-season calculus. Stafford is under contract through 2026 with a $40 million salary that becomes guaranteed on March 15. If he had walked away, the Rams would have faced a quarterback void alongside a $48.27 million dead-cap charge.

Numbers Don’t Lie

Stafford’s 2025 campaign wasn’t just good for a 37-year-old player. It was the best quarterback season in the NFL, period. The quarterback’s stats included 46 touchdowns, 4,707 passing yards, 8 interceptions, and 0 missed games throughout the season despite back issues. He earned his first career MVP award and his first-ever First-Team All-Pro selection — both in his 17th season. No stat screamed decline. No metric suggested he should stop.

What Could Have Been

Drake Maye, the 23-year-old Patriots quarterback who lost the MVP by a single first-place vote, 24 to 23, now enters the 2026 season as the heir apparent for the award, not its owner. Maye led the NFL in passer rating (113.5), completion percentage (72.0%), and yards per attempt (8.9) while steering New England to a 14-3 record and a Super Bowl 60 appearance. Had one voter flipped, Maye would have been among the youngest MVP in years — and Stafford’s future might have felt less certain. What this means is that the reigning MVP isn’t going anywhere. The Rams return their entire offensive infrastructure.

Getting Back Up

Back to Stafford’s speech, it didn’t just end speculation about the quarterback’s retirement. It retroactively reframed his team’s entire loss in the NFC Championship. Before his statement, the loss to Seattle felt like a potential final chapter. However, now, the possibilities appear endless with a clear starting point, the NFL Honors stage.

The Game Takes A Lot

Stafford turns 38 this week, which means the durability question is glaring more than ever. He’s played through an aggravated disc all season after missing most of training camp. He suffered a hand scare during the win over Carolina, which altered his accuracy for an entire quarter. In 2022, a spinal cord contusion ended his season. The body keeps a ledger, and 18 NFL seasons is an extraordinary amount of mileage. With younger players like Maye coming for him, a slight dip in his play in 2026 might flip the narrative from “triumphant return” to “should have walked away on top.”

A Storybook Ending

What remains to be seen is whether Stafford came back because he’s still elite or because the stage was too bright to leave. With SoFi Stadium hosting Super Bowl 61, Stafford playing, and the Rams roster that came within four points of the Super Bowl remaining largely intact, there’s no denying that what we have here is the makings of a great storybook ending.
