Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee is now in a Tennessee jail, accused of killing his girlfriend and facing a first-degree murder charge that prosecutors say could qualify for the death penalty. Who would have thought that this is why he is in recent headlines because just six years ago, he was wearing a Super Bowl ring with the Kansas City Chiefs, but today, he’s fighting for his freedom in a Hamilton County courtroom.
Lee, a former first-round pick of the New York Jets, also faces a charge of tampering with evidence in connection with the death of 29-year-old Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo. Prosecutors argue the case is so serious that he should not be released before trial, pointing to his criminal past and the brutality of what investigators say happened inside the couple’s rented home near Chattanooga.

In February 2020, Darron Lee was on the Kansas City Chiefs roster when they beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, adding a championship ring to a career that was already pretty impressive. Though he didn’t play in that game, the ring was a constant reminder of a journey that had taken him from first-round draft pick of the New York Jets to a spot on a championship-caliber roster.
Now he’s known for something far less impressive, as prosecutors in Hamilton County say the same former star is charged with first-degree murder in his girlfriend’s death and could ultimately face Tennessee’s harshest punishment.
Inside The Night In Ooltewah

Wednesday morning, Feb. 11, 2026, Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office crime scene technicians were documenting the home where multiple shooting victims were found yesterday in the Amberlea neighborhood in Sarasota.
On February 5, first responders were called to a rented home in Ooltewah, Tennessee, on a report of CPR in progress. When they arrived, they found Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo unresponsive on the living room floor, and efforts to revive her failed and ultimately she was pronounced dead at the scene. According to court testimony, Lee told deputies that Perpétuo had narcolepsy and probably fell in the shower.
Investigators quickly grew suspicious as they walked through the house and saw physical evidence that didn’t line up with his story at all. The case was soon reclassified as a homicide, and Lee was arrested at the same house on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
A House Spattered With Blood

The Village of Cleves municipal building photographed Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025, in Cleves, Ohio. The building once housed the Cleves Police Department, it was disbanded in 2020, now the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department serves the small village.
Detective Brian Lockhart of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office described a disturbing scene inside the home, telling the court there was blood going up the staircase, on the handrail, on the walls, and on floors in multiple rooms. He said there was blood “in just about every room except one.”
Lockhart also testified that a microwave was shattered, glass and alcohol bottles were scattered around, and cleaning supplies were found upstairs. Forensic testing confirmed that blood had been cleaned from some areas, suggesting an attempt to wipe away evidence.
Autopsy Findings That Challenge The “Fall” Story

Based on national standards, a single forensic pathologist is allowed to perform up to 300 autopsies per year.
There’s no arguing with the evidence because according to Lockhart’s testimony, doctors found severe brain trauma, a broken neck, heavy bruising across her body, a large bite mark on her shoulder and thigh, stab wounds to her legs, and significant injuries to her face. The medical examiner ruled that she died from blunt force trauma, which isn’t at all in line with a simple fall in the bathroom.
Lockhart said Lee never clearly explained how someone who allegedly fell in the shower ended up lying on the living room floor.
Why Prosecutors Are Talking About The Death Penalty

Cells in a maximum-security unit at the Allen Gamble Correctional Center in Holdenville are pictured on Aug. 20, 2025. A reporter touring the facility was not allowed to get any closer for safety reasons.
Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp has told the court she believes there are at least two aggravating factors that could make this case eligible for the death penalty under Tennessee law. While her office has not yet made a final decision on whether to pursue capital punishment, Wamp has repeatedly emphasized both the brutality of the killing and Lee’s past record of violence.
She argued that Lee should remain in jail without bond, calling him “a danger to women” and warning that he might vanish into another state if released.A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 9, when prosecutors are expected to reveal more about whether they will formally seek the death penalty.
Violent Incidents In Three States

Wamp made sure to point to a history of violent behavior stretching across Ohio, Florida, and now Tennessee. In Ohio, Lee was on probation after a 2023 case in which he allegedly pushed a woman against a wall, threw her to the floor, and hit her in the face and head multiple times with closed fists.
In Florida, he was also on probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a separate battery case after confronting a man with a gun during an argument.
Probation Violations And An Unapproved Move

Ohio State Buckeyes linebacker Darron Lee (43) pumps his fist after singing Carmen Ohio following the 42-13 win over Michigan in the NCAA football game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Nov. 28, 2015.
Testimony from supervision officials has raised serious questions about how closely Lee was being monitored before Perpétuo’s death. A Tennessee corrections and parole officer testified that Lee moved from Florida to Tennessee without getting the required approval from his probation officer, which is a clear violation of his terms.
As part of his Florida probation, Lee was supposed to complete anger management classes, and authorities say that if he had finished them, his supervision there would have ended just three days after Perpétuo died.
From Star Prospect To Defendant In An Orange Jumpsuit

Before all of this started, he entered the NFL in 2016 as a highly touted linebacker, drafted 20th overall by the New York Jets after a standout college career at Ohio State. Over three seasons with the Jets, he logged more than 200 tackles, four sacks, and three interceptions, numbers that seemed to justify his first-round status.
In 2019, he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he eventually earned a Super Bowl ring, then spent short stints with the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders before falling out of the league.

Between 2013 and 2015, he piled up triple‑digit tackles, double‑digit sacks, and multiple defensive touchdowns, making him one of the most talked‑about young defenders in college football. Ohio State sent a dozen players from that era to the NFL, and Lee was one of the headliners of that group.
For many fans, those highlight‑reel plays and big-game performances now feel like the opening chapter of a story that has ended in a twist that no-one saw coming.

While prosecutors build their criminal case, Perpétuo’s family is facing its own heartbreak and legal fight. Relatives have launched an online fundraising campaign to help pay for funeral costs, legal expenses, and the cost of transporting her body from Tennessee back to Florida.
They are also preparing a wrongful death lawsuit against Lee, seeking both accountability and financial damages for the loss of their daughter, sister, and friend. Family members told one local station that they believe Perpétuo had been abused before and that the system did not do enough to protect her.
What Lies Ahead For Darron Lee

Lee remains held without bond in the Hamilton County Jail as he waits for his March 9 preliminary hearing on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. Prosecutors must still decide whether to formally seek the death penalty, but they have already put on record that they believe the case qualifies for capital punishment under Tennessee law.
Florida authorities have requested action on a probation‑violation warrant, meaning his legal problems in that state could flare up again even as the Tennessee case unfolds. Ohio probation issues also hang in the background, proving just how many courts may still have a say in his future.
