The popularity of the NFL stems from its efforts to create as much parity as possible each year, yet multiple teams have become consistent winners. One of those teams was the New England Patriots, led by Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, who won six Super Bowls. More recently, the Kansas City Chiefs played in the last three Super Bowls, winning two of them, with quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading the way. However, during the 2025 season, the dominant teams have stumbled, and several other teams have scrambled to replace them at the top. As we transition from the regular season to the playoffs, it is important to realize that each team has a clear strength but also a flaw that could prevent it from winning in the postseason. This season’s wild-card round should be one of the most wide-open weekends of playoff games that the NFL has had in several years.

Carolina Panthers = Inconsistency on Offense

The Carolina Panthers have fought their way into the 2025 playoffs thanks to their defense’s ability to force turnovers. However, many times this season, the Panthers have not been able to capitalize on those turnovers because their offense has been inconsistent. The biggest weakness of the Panthers’ offense is quarterback Bryce Young’s inability to consistently produce big plays with their passing game. Young has shown that he can manage a game and find his checkdowns, but if the Rams load the intermediate zones this week, the Panthers will have to find ways to produce explosive plays in their passing game to get a win in the wild-card round.

Los Angeles Chargers = Containing a Mobile QB

The Los Angeles Chargers have excelled at times this season by buying into head coach Jim Harbaugh’s vision of what a championship team looks like in the NFL. Ultimately, Harbaugh’s philosophy is based on a strong running game, the ability to hit big plays with play-action passes, and a sound defense that emphasizes stopping the run and containing big plays. On the other hand, the Chargers have struggled on defense when facing a quarterback who can use his legs to extend plays and scramble for a first down. Consequently, this week, it will be critical for the Chargers’ defense to contain Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.

Houston Texans = Redzone Inefficiency

The Houston Texans earned their spot in the playoffs based on the outstanding play of their defense throughout the season. However, on the offensive side of the ball, the Texans have had to deal with injuries and inconsistency all season. Since Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud returned to lead the offense, Houston has been more consistent, allowing the offense to better complement the defense. On the other hand, even with Stroud at quarterback, the Texans have struggled to score touchdowns in the red zone, often settling for field goals. This week, the Texans could find themselves chasing the Steelers on the scoreboard if they cannot turn red zone trips into touchdowns.

Green Bay Packers = Run Defense

The Green Bay Packers have marched their way to the playoffs on the back of an explosive offense and a great pass rush. However, the Packers have recently suffered quarterback injuries, keeping Jordan Love and Malik Willis from leading the offense. In addition, the Packers’ pass rush has taken a big hit since edge rusher Micah Parsons’ season ended prematurely with a torn ACL. To make an impact in the playoffs, the Packers must overcome their injury issues, but they have struggled most against opponents’ rushing attacks. This week, the Packers’ defense faces a nightmare matchup with the Chicago Bears, who have run the ball well all season with D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai leading the way.

San Francisco 49ers = Depth Issues

The San Francisco 49ers have excelled week in and week out despite several injuries to many of their top offensive and defensive players, including running back Christian McCaffrey and quarterback Brock Purdy. When the 49ers have a healthy lineup, they are one of the toughest teams in the NFL to defeat, but they have rarely been healthy this year. Last week, the 49ers started to show cracks in their performance on offense and defense against the Seattle Seahawks in a battle for the NFC West. This week, the 49ers have to take a cross-country trip to face last year’s Super Bowl champion in Philadelphia.

Pittsburgh Steelers = Lack of Explosive Plays

This year’s Pittsburgh Steelers team has been a model of the tough reputation the Steelers have built over the last several decades. During the season, quarterback Aaron Rodgers has found ways to extend plays and find his offensive weapons to move the ball. However, the Steelers’ offense is missing the big-play potential of many other playoff teams this season. Wide receiver D.K. Metcalf has been the only consistent big-play producer for the Steelers’ offense. This week, if the Steelers have a slow start on offense and the Texans jump on them early, the Steelers could find themselves chasing the Texans in a race they most likely cannot win.

Buffalo Bills = Inconsistent Run Defense

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen runs with the ball trying to avoid Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Joseph Ossai getting the ball close to a first down during first half action at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Dec. 7, 2025.

The Buffalo Bills are built on the shoulders of their elite quarterback, Josh Allen. In addition, Bills running back James Cook has had a big year, winning the NFL’s rushing title. Where the Bills have struggled is on defense, specifically stopping opponents’ run games. For several weeks this season, the Bills’ defense struggled to stop opposing running games, putting pressure on the offense to score more points. In the games Buffalo has lost, their defense has been beaten up in the run game, and the Bills’ offense has made mistakes while trying to compensate for its defense’s failures. If the Bills cannot stop the Jacksonville Jaguars’ running game this week, they could have a very short playoff run.

Los Angeles Rams = Cornerback Vulnerabilities

The Los Angeles Rams have been the NFL’s biggest boom-or-bust team all season. When the Rams can start fast on offense and force turnovers on defense, they are one of the most difficult teams to beat in the NFL. But when their opponents can take care of the ball and put together long drives, the Rams tend to be exposed on defense. Defensively, the Rams’ weakness is at cornerback. This week, if the Carolina Panthers can find a way to set up vertical passing plays using play-action concepts, the Rams could leave Charlotte on the losing end for the second time this season.

Jacksonville Jaguars = Secondary Consistency

During the second half of the 2025 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars have shown they can be one of the top teams in the NFL. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been able to take over games with his arm and legs, helping the Jaguars pick up key wins against the best teams in the AFC. However, the Jaguars do have a significant weakness: inconsistent play by their defensive secondary. Throughout the season, the Jaguars’ defense has been susceptible to giving up big plays in the passing game, especially late in games. If the Jaguars find themselves in a close game against Buffalo, their inability to stop explosive pass plays could lead to an early playoff exit.

Philadelphia Eagles = Rushing Success Rate

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts hands the ball off to running back Saquon Barkley during first half action against the Philadelphia Eagles at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Dec. 28, 2025.

For the last several seasons, the Philadelphia Eagles have thrived on their ability to establish a strong running game led by Saquon Barkley and then expose defenses with RPOs and play-action concepts under quarterback Jalen Hurts. However, during the second half of the season, the Eagles have struggled to get their running game going early in games. That lack of running game consistency has forced them to become a more pass-heavy team, leading to turnovers and inconsistency. This week, the Eagles must be able to establish their running game and beat up a San Francisco team that is prone to injuries.

Chicago Bears = Pass Protection

The Chicago Bears have been the breakout team of the 2025 NFL season, with improved play on offense driven by head coach Ben Johnson, quarterback Caleb Williams, and an impressive running game. When the Bears are able to get their run game going on early downs, Caleb Williams and the Bears’ offense have been nearly unstoppable. But when the Bears’ offense gets behind the chains due to penalties or tackles for loss, Chicago’s offensive line has struggled to protect Williams, leading to mistakes and turnovers. This week, the Bears have caught a break while facing a Packers team missing its best pass rusher, but if Chicago gets into a hole early, the Bears’ game plan could quickly fall apart.

New England Patriots = Run Blocking Depth

Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-Imagn Images

During the 2025 NFL season, the New England Patriots have had a renaissance, rediscovering their past dominance. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has been able to lift his offense with his dual-threat playmaking. In addition, the Patriots’ offense has consistently generated explosive plays. Those big plays tend to come along when running back Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson get going on early downs. However, over the last several weeks, the Patriots’ offensive line has suffered many injuries, and a lack of depth in run blocking could become a problem. This week, it is vital that the Patriots establish their running game against the Chargers to control the tempo.
