For the last seven seasons, Sean McDermott led the Buffalo Bills to the NFL playoffs, but each year the Bills have come up short. The most recent postseason disappointment for the Bills was their overtime loss to the Denver Broncos this weekend. Following a series of emotional responses from Bills quarterback Josh Allen and head coach Sean McDermott, the Bills organization has decided to move on from McDermott. With that decision, the Bills’ next move will be critical as they find their next head coach, and that will determine whether firing McDermott was the right decision. With that in mind, who will be the Buffalo Bills’ next head coach?
#5 Mike McDaniel – Former Dolphins HC

How the Buffalo Bills approach their next moves to improve the team after firing McDermott will show how the team’s ownership believes the Bills will grow past their postseason failures. If the Bills’ ownership feels the next step is to further develop quarterback Josh Allen as a passer, then the obvious move is to hire former Miami Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel. During his time as the head coach of the Dolphins, McDaniel helped quarterback Tua Tagovailoa grow as a passer. However, adding McDaniel as the head coach will most likely prompt the Bills’ offensive coordinator to move on to another coaching position, either as a head coach or an offensive coordinator, somewhere else in the NFL. In addition, a completely new coaching staff could mean a complete rebuild for Buffalo.
#4 Brian Flores – Vikings DC

Hiring Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores as their next head coach could allow the Buffalo Bills to use their current roster build and philosophy as a launching pad into their next era. Flores has developed a reputation as one of the top defensive coordinators in the NFL, and the defensive game plans he builds are among the most innovative in the league. In addition, by hiring a defensive-minded head coach, Joe Brady could remain the Bills’ offensive coordinator, thereby maintaining the relationship between Brady and Josh Allen. However, bringing in Flores will likely trigger a series of roster changes on the defensive side of the ball, which might be necessary regardless of who is hired as the Bills’ next head coach.
#3 Klint Kubiak – Seahawks OC

Another head coaching candidate who could be hired to boost the Buffalo Bills’ offense and quarterback Josh Allen’s ability to produce more explosive plays in the passing game is Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak. Kubiak is currently the hottest name in the NFL when it comes to building an offense capable of producing explosive plays. An offense built by Kubiak would feature a strong running game packaged with play-action schemes designed to produce chunk plays in the passing game. Therefore, Kubiak could help produce a better version of quarterback Josh Allen. However, as with hiring Mike McDaniel, hiring Kubiak will likely result in Joe Brady leaving the Bills and trigger a complete overhaul of the Buffalo Bills.
#2 Joe Brady – Bills OC

For the last few NFL seasons, there has been a lot of talk about Bills Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady seeking an opportunity to be an NFL head coach. Brady already has a strong relationship with the Buffalo Bills’ top offensive players, including quarterback Josh Allen and running back James Cook. In addition, promoting Brady to the head coach position would keep continuity on the offensive side of the ball, where the Bills have been one of the top offensive teams in the NFL under the leadership of Brady. However, the Bills will still need to find answers to improve their defense, which will involve a change at defensive coordinator and a restructure of their defensive depth chart.
#1 Mike Tomlin – Former Steelers HC

Former Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin is undoubtedly the best head coaching candidate on the market, with John Harbaugh agreeing to become the head coach of the New York Giants. While Tomlin has developed a reputation for not being able to win in the postseason, that seems to be a reflection of the Steelers’ situation on offense, which has never bounced back after Ben Roethlisberger made the decision to retire. Bringing together Tomlin and Josh Allen could produce a new elite head coach-quarterback relationship. During his 19-year career in Pittsburgh, Tomlin never had a losing season and helped lead the Steelers to a Super Bowl win in 2008. In addition, Tomlin’s background is on the defensive side of the ball, which would open the door to keeping Joe Brady on the staff as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator.
