The offseason usually comes alive when the NFL free agency opens. Your phone buzzes almost constantly, and the transaction feed starts to scroll. Cap numbers swing in real time, marking an exhilarating time for many football enthusiasts. This year, the NFL free agency period officially opens on March 11 at 4:00 p.m. ET, meaning every AFC playoff team is already deep into its board work. If you’re interested in tracking space, timing, and fit before a single snap is played, then this is your gallery.
Why These Seven Pairings Matter More Than Any Top-100 List

While each ranking out there might tell you who’s available, ours goes a step further by including where the player actually belongs, and why the fit makes more sense than the name alone. You’ll get all the details a smart fan cares about, from a quarterback potentially suiting up for the team he beat in the Super Bowl 15 years ago to a franchise trying to weaponize a rookie quarterback’s cap window. Each of these seven pairings follows strict roster-construction logic, positional need, and the kind of context that separates people who follow the NFL from those who merely watch it.
Denver Broncos: Breece Hall, RB

For a little context, it’s no secret that the Broncos’ run game cratered without Dobbins. RJ Harvey, who went down with a season-ending knee injury. 24-year-old Breece Hall, who turns 25 before the 2026 season, seems like a good fit for filling the glaring hole on the Denver team. He has averaged over 88 total yards per game during the 2025 season, has 188 career receptions, and recorded 57 rushing first downs in 2025 alone — a career high. Denver has both the cap space and the championship window to make this kind of splash signing, since Bo Nix is still on his rookie deal and Russell Wilson’s dead cap finally off the books.
New England Patriots: Alec Pierce, WR

New England has had one of the best turnaround stories in recent NFL history. From the Patriots going from only four to 14 wins to reaching Super Bowl LX behind second-year quarterback Drake Maye, the team is clearly doing something right on the field. Its offense already throws the ball downfield efficiently. However, the team’s potency can be increased to another tier if it got one of the league’s best deep ball targets. Enter Alec Pierce, a vertical threat who commands safety attention on every snap. Paired with the young Maye’s arm talent, the New England Patriots might just have what it takes to reach even newer heights.
Jacksonville Jaguars: John Franklin-Myers, DE

The Jaguars won the AFC South at 13-4 and looked like a legitimate contender for much of the season. They even went as far as finishing on an 8-game winning streak. However, the team’s defense had one weakness: generating consistent edge pressure. That might just change with John Franklin-Myers, who just completed two of the best seasons of his career in Denver — 7.0 sacks in 2024 and a career-high 7.5 sacks in 2025. Myers is only 29, and totals 14.5 sacks over 33 regular-season games as a key piece of the Broncos’ elite pass rush. He’ll also become an unrestricted free agent in March.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Aaron Rodgers, QB

The Pittsburgh Steelers just hired Mike McCarthy as their head coach after Mike Tomlin departed following a wild-card loss to Houston. Aaron Rodgers’ return marks another “increase” for the team’s odds, specifically because McCarthy is the one calling. The two worked together during McCarthy’s 13-year tenure in Green Bay, which culminated in a 125-77-2 record, two of Rodgers’ four career MVP awards, and a Super Bowl victory against the Steelers in February 2011. Rodgers threw for 3,322 yards with 24 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions in 2025 while leading the Steelers to their AFC North title.
Houston Texans: Braden Smith, RT

Given how much Houston’s defense did the heavy lifting in the playoffs, it’s clear the team might need better offense to protect C.J. Stroud if it is to go deeper. That offense might come in the name of Braden Smith, who has been a rock at right tackle for the Indianapolis Colts. Smith is a big-bodied, 6-foot-6, 312-pound drive blocker who shines at pass protection as much as he does in run blocking. He has been a reliable starter throughout his career and showed improved play in 2025. At 29 (turning 30 this year), Smith is in a great spot where he is still productive but won’t command a top-of-market deal.
Buffalo Bills: Jaylen Watson, CB

While the Bills made the playoffs, their secondary remains one reason they struggled to make a deeper run. The team needs more stability on the back end, which Jaylen Watson may provide. Watson, who will be 27 entering the 2026 season, has averaged six pass breakups across each of his four NFL seasons. That consistency complements his three career interceptions and several total pass breakups. Watson presents the kind of measured, high-character addition that, while not a splashy playmaker, is reliable and versatile on the field.
Los Angeles Chargers: Tyler Linderbaum, C

The Chargers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year, losing to the Patriots in a Wild Card game. The offensive line struggled, stifling the entire offense, with Justin Herbert being sacked multiple times and limited to a low yardage total. Enter Tyler Linderbaum, arguably one of the best centers in the NFL, who might just be the signing to change the trajectory of the Chargers. Linderbaum has posted strong PFF grades in each of his four professional seasons. He is also regarded as one of the NFL’s most well-rounded centers in both gap and zone blocking schemes. He is projected to command a contract of around $73 million spread over four years, which would make him the highest-paid center in league history. While that price seems high, adding him to the Chargers will transform the interior of that line from a liability into a strength overnight.
If You Follow the Game for How It’s Played, These Are the Moves That Matter

Each of these seven pairings addresses a real, structural roster problem with a player whose skill set, age, and market value align with the team’s timeline. The Broncos need a true workhorse running back to unlock their championship window, the Patriots need a vertical threat to elevate Maye, and the Jaguars need an edge rusher they can rely on. Additionally, the Steelers need another year of elite quarterback play while they figure out the future, and the Texans need to protect their franchise quarterback. The Bills need secondary consistency, while the Chargers need to stop watching their quarterback get buried behind a broken offensive line.
