Picture this: nearly 40 college football programs were vying for Kei’Shjuan Telfair’s commitment. Clemson rolled out an entire official visit weekend just for him. Miami had their hopes pinned on a June visit. Notre Dame made sure he knew he was wanted. But on a quiet Sunday afternoon in April, Telfair, a four-star cornerback from Euclid, Ohio, ranked No. 12 nationally at his position by 247Sports, turned them all down. He chose the school that reached out first, the one that kept calling, never giving up. And just like that, Clemson’s big May recruiting weekend lost its star attraction.
The October Phone Call

It all started back in October 2024, when Penn State cornerbacks coach Terry Smith made the first move. On October 4, he offered Telfair his very first Division I scholarship. At that time, Telfair didn’t have a single Power Four offer to his name. Smith saw potential in him well before the recruiting world caught on. Clemson jumped in months later, after Telfair visited their season opener against LSU. Then came Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, USC, you name it. More than 40 Power Four programs tried to join the race, but they were all late to the party. Penn State had the head start that everyone else could only chase.
A Coaching Change That Should Have Killed It

Usually, when a college changes its head coach, recruits start looking for the exit. James Franklin moved on, and Matt Campbell took over at Penn State. Telfair had already visited campus several times during the previous staff’s tenure. This is the point when most recruits back out, and rival schools count on it. Clemson and Miami lined up official visits for late May and early June, hoping the upheaval would shake Telfair loose. But they were wrong. Campbell decided to keep Terry Smith as the cornerbacks coach, and that one move kept Penn State’s strongest connection to Telfair intact.
The Quote That Contradicts the Choice

Telfair has said in interviews that he wants to see the field early, ready to climb the depth chart no matter where he starts. Then, he turned around and picked a program that’s bringing in four cornerbacks in the same recruiting class: Robinson, Gleason, Ceasar, and Telfair. That’s four guys competing for the same spots. For someone craving immediate playing time, he chose the most crowded room. That decision speaks volumes about what Penn State really offered him.
Development Over Depth Chart Position

For Telfair, Penn State’s biggest promise was about development and preparing him for what comes after college, making it to the NFL. That’s what “next level” really means. Penn State wasn’t just offering a shortcut to early playing time, but a plan to help him grow. The trust started with Smith’s early offer and only got stronger when the coaches stayed put. This staff convinced Telfair that tough competition, four corners in one class, would only make him better. He didn’t pick a guaranteed starting spot; he picked a place that believes in his potential.
One Commit, Eight Ranking Spots

Before Telfair committed, Penn State’s 2027 recruiting class was ranked No. 21 in the country by Rivals. After his announcement, they leaped all the way to No. 13. That’s the kind of impact one elite player can make. As the No. 4 recruit in Ohio and No. 12 nationally at his position, Telfair’s commitment outweighed several lower-rated signees combined. He instantly became the headliner in Penn State’s 11-member 2027 class, and was the fourth new commit in just three days.
Clemson’s Recruiting Weekend Went Up in Smoke

Clemson had circled May 29-31 for a huge official visit weekend, with Telfair set to be the star of the show. But that all fell apart six weeks ahead of schedule. Miami never got its shot in June, and Notre Dame, despite rolling out the red carpet, couldn’t overtake Penn State, the school that called first. These powerhouse programs spent months preparing their best pitches, but Telfair made his decision before their big weekends even happened. Penn State’s early relationship and spring visits sealed the deal while everyone else was still getting ready.
The Precedent Nobody Saw Coming

Penn State didn’t “steal” Telfair, they never even had to. He was theirs from the moment Terry Smith made that first call back in October 2024. Their relationship was so solid that even a coaching change only sped things up instead of derailing them. This is Penn State’s biggest recruiting win in the 2027 cycle, all because Campbell picked up where Franklin’s staff left off. When you offer early and keep the right people around, you build momentum that latecomers can’t match. The rest of the country just learned that lesson the hard way.
The Dominos Still Falling

Now, Penn State’s recruiting class is within reach of a top-five national ranking in the 247Sports Composite. That kind of jump changes how every remaining recruit looks at Penn State. Momentum matters in recruiting, and four commits in three days creates a buzz that wasn’t there before. Clemson’s pipeline into Ohio took a real hit, and schools that used to wait for late-visit weekends now feel the heat to act sooner. The pace of recruiting just sped up, and Penn State set the new standard.
What Forty Programs Missed

Penn State football cornerbacks coach and associate head coach Terry Smith answers a reporter’s question in Holuba Hall on Thursday, June 13, 2024, in State College.
More than forty programs wanted Telfair on their roster. But only one built a relationship strong enough to survive a coaching change, a packed depth chart, and nearly two years of nonstop recruiting attention. The schools that missed out will try new tactics, offering Ohio cornerbacks sooner, promising immediate playing time, maybe even trying to lure Penn State’s commits with the chance to start as freshmen. But there’s one thing you just can’t fake: trust. In the end, it all comes down to whether a kid believes in the coach who called before anyone else even knew his name.
