Chaos hit the Buffalo Bills organization after the Team lost to the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs last weekend. It started with Sean McDermott and Josh Allen’s emotional responses to the overtime loss to Denver, but it escalated quickly when the Bills fired McDermott. Not only did they fire McDermott, but they also promoted General Manager Brandon Beane to President of Football Operations and General Manager.
The decision to fire McDermott ruffled the feathers of Buffalo Bills fans and players, including Josh Allen. However, things were starting to cool off within the Buffalo Bills organization until a social media post announced that the Bills would be interviewing former Chargers and Colts quarterback Phillip Rivers for their head coach position. Many doubted the authenticity of that announcement, but later that day, the Bills confirmed they had completed an interview with Rivers for their head coach position.
While the idea of Phillip Rivers joining the Bills first seemed like fake news, the team’s confirmation of the interview confirms the rumors.
From the whispers coming out of Buffalo, Rivers received an interview due to Bills quarterback Josh Allen pushing the Bills’ front office to consider Rivers. The rationale for pushing for Phillips Rivers to receive consideration is his pre-existing relationship with Allen. In addition, Rivers has been an outstanding head coach at the high school level before returning to the field for the Colts’ final games this year.
Is Rivers a Serious Head Coaching Candidate in Buffalo?
Hiring a coach with no prior NFL coaching experience for an NFL head coaching job is unlikely, but it has happened once before. In 1961, Norm Van Brocklin was selected to be the first head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Van Brocklin led the Vikings to a 29-51-4 record before helping the Vikings have their first winning season in 1964.
It seems like an odd time for the Bills to do something so drastic after spending the last several years as a Super Bowl contender. However, Rivers has prior head coaching experience at Saint Michael’s High School in Fairhope, Alabama, where he compiled a 43-15 record. In addition, he has also acted as a private quarterback coach for Bo Nix and Drake Maye.
