Atlanta Falcons rookie James Pearce Jr. isn’t facing a rumor. He isn’t facing an allegation that got cleaned up before it reached a courtroom. He’s facing four criminal charges, three of them felonies filed by prosecutors in Miami-Dade County. And the story of how a first-round NFL pick ended up in handcuffs on a Saturday morning in South Florida is uglier and stranger than the headline suggests. Start from the beginning. Because the beginning didn’t start on February 7.

This Had Been Building for Months

Before the arrests, before the charges, before any of it made national news, police in Doral, Florida, were already being called to addresses connected to Rickea Jackson. Not once. Not twice. Seven times between November 2025 and February 2026 911 operators logged calls tied to her address involving James Pearce Jr. On November 24 and 25, callers reported that he had been knocking on her door and ringing her landline repeatedly. She wouldn’t open it. On January 13, responding officers told Pearce directly: stay away from the residence. He wasn’t arrested. He didn’t stop.

By the time February arrived, Rickea Jackson had already made her decision. She’d ended the relationship and blocked Pearce’s number. What she described in later court documents wasn’t a breakup that went sideways; it was a pattern she said included verbal and physical abuse on multiple occasions. When her number was blocked, he simply dialed from a different line. And when she didn’t respond to that, he allegedly went further. According to court filings, in the hours before the incident that made national news, Pearce offered Jackson $75,000 just to agree to meet with him, and $200,000 if she stayed in the relationship. She said no.

On the morning of February 7 in Doral, Florida, Rickea Jackson found herself being followed in her car by a luxury SUV. At a red light, the driver got out and walked toward her door. She could have gone home. Instead, she decided to turn the car toward the Doral Police Department and call 911. That choice is documented in the arrest affidavit. What happened between that red light and the police station parking lot is where the criminal charges come from.

Before Jackson reached the station, Pearce had already used his SUV to hit her vehicle from the front. When she backed away, he hit her again from the rear. He cut her off at an intersection, spun her out, and blocked her escape route. She made it to the police station. He followed her there. And when an officer ran out to respond, Pearce rammed her car one more time, right in front of law enforcement. The photographs of Jackson’s vehicle obtained by police showed damage consistent with everything she told them.

With a gun pointed at him and a direct order to get on the ground, James Pearce Jr. got back in his SUV, locked the door, and drove off. As the vehicle pulled away, it struck the officer. Prosecutors allege the contact was intentional and that Pearce used the SUV to physically remove the officer as an obstacle. Police pursued. He crashed at a nearby intersection, ran on foot, and was tackled and subdued by responding officers. He was booked that night at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and released the following day on a $20,500 bond.

Two days after his release, Rickea Jackson filed a formal petition for an injunction for protection against dating violence in Miami-Dade County. The language she used was not ambiguous. “I am in fear of my life,” she wrote. “If the court does not intervene, I believe James will kill me.” She alleged he had threatened to place a bag over her head. She stated the abuse had occurred “on more than one occasion.” She filed notice that she is willing to testify against him. The permanent injunction hearing is scheduled for April 21, 2026. She is not backing down.

Three Felonies, One Misdemeanor — And Two Charges That Didn’t Survive Review

Three felonies, one misdemeanor, and two charges that didn’t survive prosecutorial review. The Miami-Dade State Attorney formally filed four charges against Pearce on March 12, 2026. Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Fleeing and eluding police. Resisting an officer with violence … all three felonies. The fourth charge, stalking, was downgraded from a felony to a misdemeanor. Two charges were reduced or dropped entirely: aggravated stalking was downgraded to a misdemeanor, and aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer was dismissed. His attorney maintains Pearce’s innocence and says the allegations are “hardly the full, complete story.” The court record is the full story. It’s all public.

The Falcons Gave Up Two Draft Picks for This

Here’s the thing about James Pearce Jr. that makes this hit different for Atlanta. The Falcons didn’t just draft him, they traded their 2026 first-round pick, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams, receiving a 2025 third-round pick (No. 101) in return to move up and take him at No. 26. In his rookie season he delivered: 10.5 sacks across 17 games, one forced fumble, and finished third in AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. He was the cornerstone of their pass rush rebuild. The NFL could review his case under the personal conduct policy, and depending on the language of his rookie contract, a suspension could put remaining guaranteed money at risk. The Falcons didn’t just lose a player. They may have lost the picks they paid to get him.

Nobody Knows What Happens to Him Next

Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, speaking at a prearranged coordinators’ press conference on February 11, said he was “obviously disappointed” and made clear the team is not yet in a position to determine whether Pearce will return. “It’s still so early,” Ulbrich said. “We haven’t reached a conclusion on either side yet.” The NFL conduct clock is running. The criminal case is open. The injunction hearing looms in April. Two charges were already reduced or dropped, which Atlanta-area media noted could signal plea negotiations ahead. But none of that changes what is in the public record: seven 911 calls, a car rammed into a police station parking lot, a woman who wrote “James will kill me” in a court filing, and a prosecutor who decided three felonies were worth pursuing. The docket doesn’t care about draft capital.
