Five days, that is all it took for the biggest trade in Ravens franchise history to blow up in Baltimore’s face. On Friday night, the Ravens agreed to send two first-round picks, No. 14 in 2026 and another in 2027, to Las Vegas for five-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Maxx Crosby. By Tuesday evening, the deal was dead. Crosby failed his physical, and Baltimore pulled the plug. The failed physical saved them from a massive commitment to a 28-year-old coming off season-ending knee surgery. The Raiders put out a statement saying the Ravens “backed out.”
Enter Trey Hendrickson

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson (91) watches a replay as the Detroit Lions celebrate a touchdown in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 5 game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Detroit Lions at Paycor Stadium in downtown Cincinnati on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025. The Bengals continued a losing streak, falling 37-24 to the Lions.
Less than 24 hours after the Crosby debacle, Baltimore had its man. The Ravens agreed to a four-year, $112 million contract with former Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, with $60 million guaranteed and a $20 million signing bonus. The deal can reach $120 million through incentives, including $500,000 bonuses for hitting sack thresholds at eight, 10, 12, and 14 per season. For a team that finished with just 30 sacks last year, desperation had a number: $28 million a year.
The Pivot Nobody Saw Coming

The Ravens went from trading the farm for Crosby to landing arguably the second-best free agent in the entire class without surrendering a single draft pick. CBS Sports had ranked Hendrickson the No. 2 free agent available. His camp had reportedly sought $35 million per year, but the market didn’t bite. Baltimore swooped in at $28 million annually, below the asking price but with the long-term guarantees Hendrickson had chased for three straight years.
Why Cincinnati Let Him Walk

Hendrickson spent the better part of 2025 in a slow-motion divorce from Cincinnati. He held out from OTAs, skipped minicamp, missed the start of training camp, and told reporters he’d been offered two deals, neither with the guaranteed money he wanted. The Bengals eventually gave him a $14 million raise for 2025, bringing his salary to $30 million. Then a muscle injury in December ended his season after seven games and four sacks. Cincinnati was unwilling to guarantee $60 million for a 31-year-old. Baltimore had no such hesitation.
What Hendrickson Actually Is

Forget the injury-shortened 2025. Before that, Hendrickson posted back-to-back 17.5-sack seasons, leading the NFL in 2024 and tying for second in 2023. He earned four consecutive Pro Bowl selections and a first-team All-Pro nod in 2024. Over five seasons in Cincinnati, he racked up 61 regular-season sacks. His 74.5 sacks over the last six seasons rank third-most in the league. He needs 19 more to reach 100 for his career. The production was never the question. The body was.
Baltimore’s Defensive Emergency

The Ravens went 8-9 in 2025 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2021. They fired John Harbaugh after 18 years and hired former Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. The defense allowed the most points in the first three games of any season in franchise history. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey said flatly after Week 3: “We’re just not very good.” This wasn’t a team that needed a tweak. It needed a wrecking ball off the edge.
The Cap Gymnastics

To make the Hendrickson deal work, Baltimore triggered an automatic restructure clause in Lamar Jackson’s contract, dropping his 2026 cap hit from $74.5 million to $34.54 million and freeing up nearly $40 million in space. That pushed the Ravens’ total cap room to $58.5 million, third-most in the league. The tradeoff: Jackson’s 2027 cap number balloons to $84.49 million. Baltimore is betting it can sort that out later, while Jackson is 29 and Derrick Henry still has tread on the tires.
AFC North Just Got Nastier

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (9) throws a pass in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 18 game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns at Paycor Stadium in Downtown Cincinnati on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026. The Browns kicked a last second field goal to win 20-18.
The guy Joe Burrow lined up with for five years is the same edge rusher who broke the Bengals’ franchise sack record twice and now rushes the passer in purple and black. Hendrickson will face his old team at least twice a season in a division where the Steelers just won the title. Cincinnati let him leave over guaranteed money. Baltimore handed him $60 million in guarantees without blinking. The Ravens’ calculus was simpler: they couldn’t generate pressure, and this man has 81 career sacks.
The Bet Baltimore Is Making

Strip away the chaos of the last five days, and the Ravens’ offseason math looks surprisingly clean. They keep both first-round picks. They land an elite pass rusher on a market-rate deal. The risk is real. Hendrickson turns 32 in December. He’s coming off core muscle surgery and played seven games last season. But if he’s anywhere close to the guy who posted 35 sacks across 2023 and 2024, this defense transforms overnight.
